Judge Progression levels

Prospective Judge:

  1. If you are not already a GRC member, Become a GRC Dogsports Member. Follow the "join" prompts on our website.

  2. Study the rule-book. If you are not an SR judge, start there.  If you are already a SR judge, review the rules of the event you wish to judge.

  3. Study the SR 101 video on the GRC youtube channel.

  4. Take the written test online ($25 US each):

Once you have passed the test, you will be a prospective judge. You will gain access to the judge’s forum. You may host “mock” trails, or work under judges at real shows to gain experience.

You MUST become an SR Judge before becoming a judge in any of the drive events.

Apprentice Judge:

Once you have completed all the check lists and are ready, you will need to contact a mentor judge and plan your internship. You must intern and PASS at each of these levels of apprenticeship:

  • Intern at a show as a shadow judge.
    • Unofficially score the competitors and show/explain your scoring to the official judge for their sign off.  There is one show minimum but may take more depending on proficiency.
  • Intern at a show as an apprentice judge.
    • Officially score the competitors. A mentor judge will score the event also. If your scores are sound they will be used. If there is an issue, or you are unable to score a person, the mentor judge's score will be used. If there are no issues, the mentor judge will sign off.  There is a one show minimum but may take more depending on proficiency.

While you are an Apprentice judge, you may still host “mock” trails, or work under judges at real shows to gain experience.

Certified Judge:

Once all of these have been met.... You will be listed as an official certified Judge in that event. You will be able to officiate events, and give titles at your discretion.

You will also be able to pursue the same process to become a judge in the drive events of your choice.
